The Librarians and the Wrath of Chaos – Director: Marc Roskin/Writer: Marco Schnabel
This one starts with Eve meeting General Rockwell in a secluded spot to talk about helping DOSA get into the Library. Eve says she’ll do it as long as DOSA follows her plan and they let the Librarians go free. Rockwell argues that last point, but finally agrees when Eve threatens not to help her.
When she gets back to the Library, Eve tells the others she’s been meeting
with DOSA, hoping to figure out their plans. She shows them a note written in Lakota that refers to a powerful lost artifact hidden near Mount Rushmore. Jacob, Cassandra, and Ezekiel go to retrieve the artifact, while Flynn stays behind to talk to Eve about her contact with DOSA. At Mount Rushmore (which Ezekiel is dying to see
up close), they find the next clue, but Jacob quickly realizes it’s a fake and they’ve been sent on a wild goose chase. They figure DOSA must be making a move against the Library and decide to head back. Unfortunately, someone has dismantled the Back Door mechanism and Eve is leading DOSA troops into the Library. Flynn feels betrayed, but Jenkins reminds him they need to save as many artifacts as possible from DOSA.
Jenkins tries to hold off the DOSA soldiers, but Eve has given them the head of Medusa, which Rockwell uses to turn Jenkins to stone. DOSA starts gathering up artifacts while Flynn sneaks around grabbing as many as he
can to keep them away from the government-sponsored looters. The others hitch a ride to the Annex, where they see DOSA hauling out dozens of artifacts. Eve turns Jenkins (now chained up) back to flesh and tries to rationalize her part in everything, but he’s too pissed off to listen. The others get in touch with Flynn, who tells them to follow the truck that took Jenkins and try to rescue him so he can initiate the fail-safe that cuts the Library off from reality. Eve asks
Rockwell about Apep’s sarcophagus and she admits DOSA has it already. When Eve expresses doubt about their ability to contain Apep, Rockwell offers to show her. The others stow away to get to the facility where Jenkins was taken, which turns out to be DOSA’s version of the Library except they use technology to protect the artifacts instead of magic. It actually looks a lot like Warehouse 13, although there’s no mention of Artie or Claudia.
The Librarians find Jenkins but he’s sealed inside a box that takes all their skills into account and that they can’t break into because they’re technically too smart. Once they realize that, they use the opposite of the right answers
and free Jenkins. When they mention the fail-safe, he tells them he doesn’t know how to initiate it. At the port, Rockwell shows Eve the sarcophagus, which is protected every possible way DOSA has. But Eve’s trepidation makes Rockwell worry enough to open the sarcophagus after Eve leaves just to check … and she’s immediately taken over by Apep. In the Library, Flynn talks to Charlene and admits that he’s planning to use the Eye of Ra to get rid of Apep once and for all. Unfortunately (as we saw in the Trial of the Triangle), that takes a
human sacrifice and since Flynn isn’t willing to sacrifice anyone else, he knows it has to be him. Apep brings a bomb to detonate the Library and spread pure evil through the world. After knocking Eve out, Apep follows Flynn to the heart of the Library and plants the bomb. The others sneak in and find Eve, who tells them her betrayal was part of a plan she and Flynn worked out to get Apep there and end his threat forever. But she’s just as surprised as they are when Jenkins tells them Flynn has to sacrifice himself to use the Eye of Ra.
The bomb goes off, fracturing the Library’s core and cutting the others off from reaching Flynn. Apep leaves Rockwell’s body and manifests as an energy form. Flynn goes after him and Eve manages to get through the
blockage before the next cave-in piles up more rubble. Eve tries to talk Flynn out of his plan, but he collapses the walkway an confronts Apep, getting blasted for his trouble. The others get through and Eve implores them to find a way to prevent Flynn’s sacrifice. Jacob realizes the tattoos he got in Shangri-La might be the answer and they quickly find a girder to cross the gap. Flynn uses the Eye to absorb Apep’s evil and the others bestow their gifts on Apep: Jacob gives him the gift of a soul, Cassandra give him thought (using her enhanced ability to send her thoughts to others), and Ezekiel gives him love (using the love potion he got from Cindy). That turns Apep mortal,
which means he can be the human sacrifice needed by the Eye of Ra. Absorbing the evil destroys Apep, restores the Library, and gets rid of most of the errant ley lines. Later, Flynn and Eve admit they set Rockwell up to be possessed and used DOSA to protect the artifacts from the fight they knew would take place in the Library. Rockwell reluctantly decides to return the artifacts, figuring they’ll be safer in the Library. The Librarians tell Eve and Jenkins they’ve decided not to use magic (or even their enhanced gifts) except as a last resort, preferring to use their brains and skills instead.
This is a good episode and a fitting end to the Apep storyline. I figured Eve’s “betrayal” wasn’t real, but I didn’t expect Flynn to be in on it. Flynn not
telling her about sacrificing himself fits his character and it was great to see the Librarians working together to defeat Apep by turning him human. I’m still not sure what Charlene said to Eve last episode; was it something to do with the plan to fool DOSA, or something else that we’ll find out next season? Eve is supposed to have some kind of special destiny as a Guardian, so maybe it has something to do with that. I’m not sure about the Librarians’ refusal to use their enhanced gifts (or magic), but it’ll probably cut down on the special effects budget at least.
