Wonder Woman 39 coverWonder Woman #39 – “Poisoned Souls” – George Perez, Mindy Newell/Chris Marrinan/Mike Machlan

Last issue, Diana was ambushed by Eris (Goddess of Discord) who had already taken over Menalippe and Penelope. Eris wants to sow chaos on Paradise Island for the guests from the outside world and she’s off to a pretty good start, replacing the three Amazons with simulacra and using them to stir up trouble. Diana’s soul is trapped but tries to fight back out of pure instinct. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Wonder Woman 39, Green Arrow 29, Firestorm 94”

Wonder Woman 38 coverWonder Woman #38 – “Forbidden Fruit” – George Perez, Mindy Newell/Chris Marrinan/Mike Machlan

This one starts with Lois Lane and the other guests on Themiscyra attending a sort of Passion Play about how the Amazons were created and how they first came to Paradise Island. Menalippe is the narrator, but her tone conveys boredom rather than passion, something noted by Lois and Diana. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Wonder Woman 38, Green Arrow 28, Firestorm 93”

Comics Reviews: Question Annual 2, Green Arrow Annual 2

Question Annual 2 coverQuestion Annual #2 – “Losing Face” – Dennis O’Neill/Bill Wray, Shea Anton Pensa

This one starts with the Question stopping a mugging and getting stabbed in the arm. He then has to stop the bigoted victim from taking revenge on an unconscious mugger, so he’s in a bad mood by the time he gets home. As Aristotle Rodor (aka Tot) patches his arm (using the Question mask as a bandage), they reminisce about how Vic Sage became the Question ten years ago. Green Arrow 27 coverGreen Arrow #27 – “Enter …” – Mike Grell/Dan Jurgens/Dick Giordano, Frank McLaughlin

This one starts with Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen hanging out in a dive bar. Some punk recognizes him and pulls a knife, pissed off that Green Arrow sent him to prison a while back. Arrow leaves the punk with his hand pinned to the bar with his own knife and heads home. Dinah (Black Canary) Lance bandages up a wound on Ollie’s shoulder (although I’m not sure if he got the wound in the bar fight, or if it was something he already had). Green Arrow 26 coverGreen Arrow #26 – “Ollie of Sherwood” – Mike Grell/J. J. Birch/Michael Bair

This one continues from last issue, with Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen still in the pub. The innkeeper tells him he shouldn’t stir up trouble by investigating Hawthorne’s death. He tells Oliver how Hawthorne’s daughter-in-law got into witchcraft after her husband died, and how it drove her to a premature death. Now Hawthorne’s granddaughter (Rowan) has followed in her mother’s footsteps and gotten into the whole “magic” thing. This one starts at a graveyard in a forest, where a woman is enacting some kind of ritual with a baby. An Owl warns her that some men with guns and dogs are coming, so she gives the baby back to its mother and takes off. The dogs run her down, but she calms them with her witchcraft and heads home to a large manor house. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Green Arrow 25, Young All-Stars 30, Suicide Squad 34”

Green Arrow 23 coverGreen Arrow #23 – “Kia” – Mike Grell/Dan Jurgens/Dick Giordano, Frank McLaughlin

This one starts with Green Arrow and Shado reviewing their performance against the opposition in the mountain monastery last issue. They came there looking for info on Shado’s son, who’s been kidnapped to force Shado to assassinate someone (possibly the American president). But Shado went a little wild at the monastery and killed all the yakuza who were there. Green Arrow tried to spare one, but he killed himself rather than be questioned. This one starts with a shadowy group of men discussing what seems to be a plot to assassinate the President (and it’s strongly hinted that one of the men might’ve been involved in the Kennedy assassination). In Japan, we see Shado nursing a baby and practicing with her bow. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Green Arrow 21, Green Arrow 22, Young All-Stars 28, Suicide Squad 32”

Last issue, Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen shot a kid who was aiming a paint gun at a cop, thinking it was a real gun. The kid lived and Green Arrow was cleared (since the cop also tried to shoot the kid and missed), but the judge gave him shit for being a reckless vigilante and Green Arrow’s guilt drove him to drink heavily.
