Green Arrow 18 coverGreen Arrow #18 – “The Horseman Part 2” – Mike Grell/Dan Jurgens/Dick Giordano, Frank McLaughlin

Last issue, a biker calling himself the Horseman came to Seattle looking for a red-headed stripper named Dawn, busting up various strip clubs looking for her. Dawn ended up being beaten to death and crucified, but the Horseman doesn’t know that yet, so he’s still smashing up strip clubs looking for her. Green Arrow 17 coverGreen Arrow #17 – “The Horseman Part 1” – Mike Grell/Dan Jurgens/Dick Giordano, Frank McLaughlin

This one starts with a dude on a motorbike (the Horseman) stopping off at a roadside strip club. He’s looking for a specific stripper calling herself Dawn, but she’s not there. After pounding the bouncers and torching the owner’s Cadillac, the Horseman leaves. We see Dawn (who apparently likes fetish gear) performing at a different strip club, this one in Seattle. Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen and Dinah (Black Canary) Lance are in the audience and Dinah is surprisingly cool with hanging out at a strip joint. (In fact, it kinda seems like going there was her idea.) Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Green Arrow 17, Young All-Stars 24, Suicide Squad 26”

Last issue, Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen ran into a mysterious assassin and spent the evening drinking with him. Right after Oliver left, some guys arrived and blew up the assassin’s hotel room. Oliver hears the blast and heads back, but the assassin smelled trouble and headed up to the roof just ahead of the explosion. He makes a prodigious leap across to a bridge and Green Arrow prevents his attackers from gunning him down. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Green Arrow 16, Young All-Stars 23, Suicide Squad 25”

Detective Comics Annual 1 coverDetective Comics Annual #1 – “The Monkey Trap” – Denny O’Neil/Klaus Janson/Tony DeZuniga

This is the first of a three-part story that continues in the Green Arrow and Question annuals, linked by the story of a Japanese sensei who imparts some wisdom to each of the heroes in exchange for their help later. We start with a scene from the sensei’s past, when he was a soldier in Manchuria during the Sino-Japanese War. Batman 428 coverBatman #428 – “A Death in the Family Chapter 5” – Jim Starlin/Jim Aparo/Mike DeCarlo

This continues the storyline of Jason (Robin) Todd’s death. Apparently, the fans actually got to decide his fate at the time, calling either of two phone numbers to vote for killing Jason or sparing him. Obviously, they voted to kill him, although on the Letters Page, Denny O’Neil claims the vote was pretty close (5343 for killing Robin to 5271 against). Batman 427 coverBatman #427 – “A Death in the Family Chapter 3” – Jim Starlin/Jim Aparo/Mike DeCarlo

If you’re wondering what happened to Chapter 2, it was last issue; these issues are double-sized and DC published a couple extra issues of most titles (labelled Winter and Holiday) at the end of 1988. Speaking of last issue, we saw Jason (Robin) Todd figure out that the woman he’d thought was his other was actually his stepmom. He narrowed his biological mother down to three possible candidates: Sharmin Rosen, Shiva Woosan, and Sheila Haywood, all of whom were overseas. This one starts with Batman and Robin observing some scumbags who are running a child porn ring. The Dynamic Du are supposed to wait for the cops to show up, but Robin gets impatient and jumps in ahead of schedule. After pounding all the punks, Batman gives Robin shit for acting rashly, but Robin shows no remorse, stating that life is just a game. Batman 425 coverBatman #425 – “Consequences” – Jim Starlin/Mark Bright/Steve Mitchell

This one starts with Bruce Wayne opening a letter that was left at police headquarters addressed to Batman. It’s from Jose Garzonas (whose scumbag son died “accidentally” last issue in close proximity to Robin) and contains a photo of Commissioner Gordon tied up in a junkyard. Garzonas wants Batman to “bring the boy”, meaning he obviously thinks Robin killed his son and wants to even the score. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Batman 425, Detective 592, Green Arrow 10”
