Last issue, a new Royal Flush Gang started taking out various Justice Leaguers to establish some quick cred. Firestorm and Aquaman wound up comatose in a Los Angeles hospital and Wonder Woman was knocked out just outside. But the new Jack found out the leader of the Royal Flush (Ace) is actually a robot, reporting to an unseen master called Wild Card. (No, I don’t think it’s George R.R. Martin.) This issue is a bit different because a lot of the story is told from the villains’ points of view. But it starts with a couple of good guys (Aquaman and Firestorm) hanging out in the southern Pacific Ocean (with Aquaman surfing on a couple of dolphins). Aquaman has brought Firestorm there for some training, but he’s also hoping to give the young hothead an attitude adjustment; Firestorm has been acting a bit too cocky lately, jumping into situations before being properly prepared, so Aquaman has decided to give him a lesson in humility. This one starts with Batman doing some routine maintenance on the outer hull of the JLA Satellite. Hawkman is monitoring him from inside and thinks he should be the one out in space, not Batman. But apparently the Leaguers take turns doing EVA stuff and it was Batman’s turn this time. Hawkman’s worries prove right though, as Batman accidentally drops a tool and shorts out a main power circuit. This one starts with a broken down dude named Joe Parry reminiscing along the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Parry once found an alien artifact (way back in JLA 31) that made his wishes come true, but he got greedy and ended up getting his ass kicked by the Justice League. Now that he’s out of prison, he’s cursing himself for not doing more with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he had. As indicated above, George Perez and Brett Breeding did the framing story and climax, and the whole thing was written by Gerry Conway. I’ll give art credits for each chapter as we get to them. Last issue, the Lord of Time cooked up a convoluted scheme (is there any other kind for him?) that involved taking four JLAers (Flash, Green Lantern, Elongated Man, and Zatanna) into 1878 Arizona. Lord of Time has info that an anti-matter strike (like the one at Tunguska in 1908) was supposed to happen in 1878 over the Grand Canyon. Last issue, the new Secret Society of Super-Villains (led by the now apish Ultra-Humanite) managed to capture five JLA and five JSA members. Ultra-Humanite has told his minions that banishing these ten heroes to Limbo will randomly wipe out all the super-heroes on either Earth-1 or Earth-2. What the other villains don’t know is that it’s Earth-2’s heroes that will vanish … and Ultra-Humanite knew that all along. Last issue, the JLA and JSA were beset by a new Secret Society of Super-Villains led by Ultra-Humanite. Ultra-Humanite has told his minions (a mix of villains from Earth-1 and Earth-2) that if a certain set of superheroes are sent to Limbo, that’ll result in the disappearance of all super-heroes from one of the Earths. Since the villains figure they have even odds of eliminating heroes from their Earth, they’re all in; what they don’t know is that Ultra-Humanite is lying to them … he knows exactly which Earth will lose its heroes—the one he inhabits. I had this three-parter when I was a kid and it’s one of my favourite JLA stories (actually, it’s one of my favourite comics stories) and definitely my favourite JLA/JSA crossover. Judging by what I’ve heard from other comics fans, I’m not alone. Over half of this issue deals with the “recruitment” process, showing the gathering of two sets of villains, one on each Earth.
