Superman 377 coverSuperman #377 – “Terra Times Two” – Paul Kupperberg/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt

This one starts with a typical day in Metropolis, as Superman chases the cosmic cowboy Terra-Man through the city. Terra-Man has added to his arsenal of high-tech weaponry and hits Supes with some red sun energy that binds him and drains his powers. Terra-Man shoots razor sharp cacti at the Man of Steel, hoping his weakened condition will leave him vulnerable. Superman uses Terra-Man’s horse to pull him free of the red sun energy and decks the goofy villain. Before he can wrap things up, Terra-Man disappears into a space warp, leaving Superman holding his lasso. Superman 376 coverSuperman #376 – “The Ozone-Master Comes Calling” – Elliot S! Maggin/Curt Swan/Dan Adkins

This one starts with Superman interrupting a robbery at a high-end glassware store. He’s surprised when the robbers’ weapons actually hurt him, first a heat gun then a force projector. Supes manages to chase the thieves away without smashing up the place and when they attempt to flee in an armoured helicopter, the Man of Steel destroys it and captures them … but not before getting blasted with another painful force beam. Superman 375 coverSuperman #375 – “The Stoning of Lana Lang” – Cary Bates/Curt Sawn/Dan Adkins

Last issue, Lana Lang prepared to leave Earth to go live with her alien loverboy, Vartox. Lana received a boon from out of nowhere, a protective aura allowing her to live in the harsh atmosphere of Vartox’s planet. But unknown to anyone, Vartox’s first love (Syreena) has returned from the dead and is the one who gave Lana the protective aura. Syreena hates Vartox for leaving her and has been screwing with his head, hypnotizing him to believe Superman is trying to get Lana for himself. Superman 374 coverSuperman #374 – “Love is Deadlier … the Second Time Around” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Dan Adkins

Last issue, Superman’s old friend Vartox came to Earth for a visit, and to reconnect with Lana Lang. Vartox’s planet is too toxic for Lana to live there, but she acquired a protective aura from an incorporeal benefactor. Instead of being suspicious of this sudden good fortune, Lana and Vartox were thrilled and started making plans for her to go back to his planet together. Superman 373 coverSuperman #373 – “Lana Lang’s Farewell to Earth” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt

This one starts with Superman doing a favour for some oil drillers by removing a big rock that’s been impeding their drill. As soon as Superman gets the rock in the air, it starts growing at an alarming rate. He figures the “rock” is some ancient weapon, buried on Earth long ago and meant to expand so much as to destroy the entire planet and that he must’ve triggered it when he moved it. Superman 372 coverSuperman #372 – “Superman’s History-Changing Mission” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Frank Chiaramonte

This one starts with a couple of WGBS traffic reporters in their helicopter over Metropolis. The reporters almost have heart attacks when a black meteorite streaks by, but Superman is soon on the scene to take care of things. The meteorite turns out to be made of anti-matter, which means if it touches any positive matter (of which Metropolis and Superman are made) it’ll cause an explosion that annihilates both forms of matter. Superman 371 coverSuperman #371 – “Kandor Lives Again” – Len Wein/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt

Last issue, Superman returned to his Fortress of Solitude to find the tiny model of Kandor he’d built was now occupied by tiny people. As this issue starts, Superman at first thinks he’s going crazy but the minuscule aliens soon convince him otherwise. They tell him they’re from a planet called Sh’str, a near-Utopian world in another dimension where society was devoted to peace and the pursuit of knowledge. Superman 370 coverSuperman #370 – “Better Vengeance Through Chemo-stry” – Len Wein/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt

I had this comic as a kid, although he story is only vaguely familiar. It starts with Superman in his Fortress putting the finishing touches on a replica of the bottle city of Kandor that he’s been building. Superman helped the real Kandorians find a new home (in Superman 338), so he’s put together this model to replace the real Kandor in his trophy room. While reminiscing about Kandor, he gets an emergency signal and rushes off into space. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Superman 370, Action 530, DC Comics Presents 44, Warlord 56”

Superman 368 coverSuperman #368 – “The Revenger of Steel” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Frank Chiaramonte

Over the last couple of issues, Superman changed himself into a reptilian alien named Vlatuu so he could infiltrate the Superman Revenge Squad. Because his transformation actually changed his brain patterns, his plan worked; he insinuated himself into the Revengers and gained their trust (and the amorous attentions of an alien hottie named Nryana). Vlatuu managed to defeat the Revengers’ Superman android, thus earning the privilege of going to Earth to kill the real Man of Steel.
