Wonder Woman 30 coverWonder Woman #30 – “To Live By the Sword” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Will Blyberg

Last issue, Wonder Woman went to Egypt in pursuit of Barbara (Cheetah) Minerva, who had stolen her magic lasso. Getting lost in a sandstorm, Wonder Woman ended up in a hidden city full of Amazons (Bana-Mighdall), but not the Amazons she’s familiar with. She stumbled on the bodies of two Amazons (killed by the Cheetah) and the other Amazons assumed she killed their sisters, so they attacked her. Last issue, Wonder Woman went to England to retrieve her stolen lasso from Barbara (Cheetah) Minerva, but Cheetah’s servant (Chuma) poisoned Wonder Woman’s tea. As she lays dying, Chuma tells Wonder Woman how Minerva gained the Cheetah powers. She’d led an archaeological expedition into the jungle and run into Chuma’s tribe, who worship a plant god called Uzkartaga. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Wonder Woman 29, Firestorm 84”

Wonder Woman 28 coverWonder Woman #28 – “Jungle Sacrament” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Will Blyberg

This one starts in England, with the mercenaries who grabbed the captive Khunds last issue showing up at a meeting on Barbara Minerva’s estate. They think it has something to do with the Khund job, but are suspicious enough to bring weapons. Their guns don’t do them much good against Minerva’s alter ego (Cheetah), who stalks and kills them. Wonder Woman 27 coverWonder Woman #27 – “From Day Into Night” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Will Blyberg

This one starts with Steve Trevor and Etta Candy visiting Themiscyra with Diana. The Amazons have healed Steve’s injuries (from his fight with the Durlans last issue) and most of them are quite happy to meet the son of their former hero, the first Princess Diana. Even Philippus is welcoming towards him, despite her earlier reluctance to allow men on the island. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Wonder Woman 27, Firestorm 82”

Wonder Woman 26 coverWonder Woman #26 – “The Immortal Storm” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Will Blyberg

This one starts with Wonder Woman heading home from the Pacific after saying farewell to the justice League. Most of them are quite impressed by her (although Ice is a bit worried that Guy might have a thing for her) and Wonder Woman herself thinks it might be nice to belong to the League (which is foreshadowing her brief membership in the Justice League Europe). Batman Annual 12 coverBatman Annual #12 – “Slade’s Demon” – Mike Baron/Ross Andru, Pablo Marcos/Denis Rodier

This story is about a murder mystery weekend at the mountaintop estate of Deacon Slade. Deacon built the estate himself, but he was banging the builder’s wife. When the builder found out, he went nuts and slaughtered nine people with an axe before the cops shot him. Apparently, Deacon also pushed the builder’s assistant over a cliff. Rumours also hinted that Deacon was into demonology and was planning some kind of ritual sacrifice. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Batman Annual 12, Wonder Woman Annual 1”

Wonder Woman 25 coverWonder Woman #25 – “The Burning School” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Will Blyberg

This is an Invasion crossover that coordinates with JLI 22, repeating a number of scenes from that issue (which is why Giffen and DeMatteis get a special mention in the credits). This one opens with Lieutenant Etta Candy running for her life on a small Pacific island. Etta was assigned to a radio post and detected transmissions from the invading alien vessels. Her superiors weren’t sure whether to believe her or not, but when the aliens came in and started blasting, they figured out it was for real. Last issue, Hermes came to Earth to revive the worship of the Greek gods by humanity. His method of attracting followers was to dole out temporary miracles, ensuring humans would continue their adoration in the hopes of earning more favours. Diana was troubled by Hermes’ methods, but decided to follow him anyway, which pissed Julia off. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Wonder Woman 24, Firestorm 79, Warlord 133”

Wonder Woman 23 coverWonder Woman #23 – “A God Among Men” – George Perez/Will Blyberg

This one starts with Vanessa Kapatelis getting all kinds of attention from her classmates at school because she’s in a magazine article about the Amazons. Vanessa’s friendship with Wonder Woman has made her pretty popular, so much so that she ignores her supposed best friend Eileen (who she never treated all that well, actually) to hang out with the cool kids. Eileen even sticks up for Vanessa with Lucy Spears, but Lucy’s surprised to learn that Barry was Vanessa’s boyfriend, since he didn’t tell her that when they started hanging out. Wonder Woman 22 coverWonder Woman #22 – “Through Destiny’s Door” – George Perez/Bob McLeod

This one starts on Themiscyra, with Diana reading the official tally of votes about whether to open up Themiscyra to outsiders or not. The majority of Amazons voted yes, so that means outsiders will be coming to Paradise Island for the first time in centuries (including males), and some of the Amazons aren’t thrilled with that idea. We get a brief interlude showing some kind of metallic ball heading through space towards Earth. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Wonder Woman 22, Firestorm 77, Warlord 132”
