Legion of Super-Heroes 58 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #58 – “If Thine Eye Offend Thee” – Paul Levitz/Keith Giffen/Al Gordon

Last issue, Emerald Empress was searching for the secrets of immortality and came to Earth to gather information. She ran afoul of the Legion and ended up taking Polar Boy hostage in the skies above Metropolis, threatening to destroy the city’s powersphere, which would blow the whole city to hell. The assembled Legionnaires (Lightning Lass, Blok, Magnetic Kid, Tellus, and Timber Wolf) back off for Polar Boy’s sake, but Emerald EmpressColossal Boy grabs Empress prepares to blast the powersphere anyway. Colossal Boy shows up to grab her, but the Emerald Eye gives her enough power to blast him and take off. Dawnstar has mostly recovered from her earlier fight with Empress and is ready to start tracking her again. (She also seems ready for a relationship with Wildfire, but this time it’s him that says it can’t work between them.) Colossal Boy’s wife Yera is pissed of that he risked his life against Emerald Empress so soon after his old wounds healed, but he says he has to do his duty as a Legionnaire. On Trom (the planet where Element Lad was born which was fighting on Tromdevastated by space pirates), Emerald Empress ponders the memorials to the fallen and we get a hint that she might be looking for a way to get rid of the Emerald Eye. It kinda sounds like the Eye attached itself to her and although she enjoyed the power it gave her at first, now she’s getting tired of it and wants to be free of the Eye’s influence. The Legionnaires show up and she slaps them around, but they do better this time. Element Lad uses his powers to blast the Eye, which wounds Emerald Empress pretty badly … and really pisses her off. She absorbs the Eye’s power and starts pounding the Legionnaires. Quislet tries to take over the Eye, but can’t. So he knocks it into space, hoping theQuislet blasted distance will weaken Emerald Empress. She blasts Quislet’s ship and he’s forced to retreat back into his own dimension. Emerald Empress takes off into space and we see that she’s hurt but the Eye won’t let her die. Apparently, her research into immortality isn’t so she gain it—the Eye has basically given her immortality already—but so she could get free of the Eye and finally die. She appears before Sensor Girl on the Legion Cruiser (as Sensor Girl predicted she would) and asks for her help. Sensor Girl addresses her as Sarya of Venegar, telling her she’s familiar with the Eye’s power from her studies on Orando. Emerald Emerald Empress diesEmpress begs to be released from the Eye’s thrall and Sensor Girl uses her powers to isolate the Eye so it can’t sense her (or anything else) anymore. Since the Eye can’t sense Empress, it can no longer posses her and she ages and crumbles to dust, thanking the horrified Sensor Girl with her final breath.

New Titans 54 coverNew Titans #54 – “Answers and Questions” – Marv Wolfman/George Perez/Romeo Tanghal

This one starts with Danny Chase still on monitor duty at Titans’ headquarters. He’s still mad about being left behind and gets a little rough when Terry Long shows up looking for his wife, Donna (aka Wonder Girl). Danny tells him the Titans went into space to help the Greek Titans save themselves and explore Donna’s true origins. Terry suggests he and Danny hang out while they wait for the team to return. On Syriannaq, Sparta (one of the “seeds” that the Greek Titans nurtured) is having a temper tantrum and raving about vengeance. HerSparta blasts her followers behaviour is so extreme that even her subjects (who were probably just following her out of fear anyway) are ready to get rid of her. Naturally, such sentiments aren’t appreciated and Sparta ends up wasting some of her own people, which scares the rest into submission, but certainly doesn’t win her any respect. On New Chronus, Donna, her teammates, and the Greek Titans are mourning the death of Xanthi, who sacrificed himself to save his fellow seed Athyns last issue. Athyns feels guilty since he and Sparta were lovers once, but it’s obvious she’s too far gone for any sentimental feelings. The Greek Titans are Nightwing's plandespondent because they needed all three seeds to break the curse on them and restore their vitality, but now that Xanthi’s dead, that’s not an option. But Nightwing has been thinking and comes up with a plan. He noticed that when Raven fought Sparta, she lost control of her power for a bit. Raven confirms that Sparta’s power was contained inside her soul-self momentarily. Nightwing points out the obvious, that with Donna, Athyns, and Sparta (who’s absorbed the power of all the seeds she killed) they still have three seeds, so they can still free the Greek Titans. But Raven will have to contain Sparta’s power, while Starfire and Changeling distract her long enough for Raven to getStarfire attacks close. Sparta goes nuts and starts wasting more of her people, which gives Starfire and Changeling a chance to attack. They keep her busy until Raven can pull Sparta into her soul-self, where Donna and Athyns are waiting. They try to reason with Sparta, but her paranoia and hatred are too strong. She attacks them and they barely manage to grab her and hold on as she channels all her energy into breaking free. Raven directs that energy towards New Chronus, where the Greek Titans are ready to receive it. After a huge energy flare, the Greek Titans have their powers restored, but Sparta is reduced to a mindless husk. grabbing SpartaHer former subjects want her dead, but the newly restored Titans counsel mercy. The Titans vow to leave and no longer interfere with mortals, taking Sparta and Athyns with them and returning Donna to Earth … with a special gift. We’ll have to wait until next issue to see what that gift is.
